Diaminoethyl-dithiolhexane
Diaminoethyl-dithiolhexane (DAE-DTH), also known as 1,4-bis(2-aminoethyl)-2,5-dithiolhexane, is a chelating agent developed by Björklund Pharma with a specific affinity for mercury ions (Hg2+).
The compound’s molecular architecture comprises a hexane backbone with two aminoethyl (-NH-CH2-CH2-NH2) groups flanking dithiol (-SH) functionalities (-S-S-) at carbons 2 and 5, which are integral to its chelation capabilities.
DAE-DTH forms stable complexes with Hg ions facilitated by its dithiol groups. This chelation removes Hg from biological systems, reducing its toxic impact on cells and organs. Biologically, DAE-DTH demonstrates compatibility, cellular uptake, and distribution. Its potential to traverse biological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier, positions it as a potential candidate for addressing Hg-induced neurological toxicity.
DAE-DTH holds promise in treating acute and chronic Hg poisoning by binding Hg ions and potentially protecting vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and brain from Hg toxicity. However, further research and clinical investigations are needed.
