Spongiderm, a product candidate from Björklund Pharma, utilizes compounds from the freshwater lake sponge Spongilla lacustris to treat moderate to severe acne, mild to moderate psoriasis, and moderate to severe rosacea. The sponge’s silica spicules exfoliate the skin, stimulate collagen production, and unclog pores while enhancing the delivery of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds like spongin and bioactive silica.

Research shows the compounds in Spongiderm effectively reduce inflammation and bacteria, targeting acne-causing Cutibacterium acnes. With a once-weekly application, Spongiderm offers a potentially faster and more effective treatment for inflammatory skin conditions than existing products.
